Help keep Castle Rock’s creeks clean at annual Spring Up the Creek event May 6

SpringUp2017SMG

Don’t let Colorado’s unpredictable weather get you down. The sun is shining and many people are ready to get outside. Celebrate the spring season at the Town’s annual Spring Up the Creek event.

This year’s event will be from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 6. New in 2017 – due to construction at Festival Park, the event will be at a new location. Join us in the far north parking lot of Douglas County High School, 2842 Front St.

The annual event helps keep the community’s water clean and promotes the importance of protecting the environment. The Town hosts this event in partnership with Douglas County, Castle Pines Metro District, Plum Creek Water Reclamation Authority and the Chatfield Watershed Authority.

“This annual event is a real benefit to our community’s drinking water supply,” said Director of Castle Rock Water Mark Marlowe. “The Plum Creek Water Purification Facility purifies water from shallow wells near the creek. Community events like this help protect the environment and those shallow wells used for portions of our community’s water supply.”

This year’s event theme is “Scoop Up the Poop.” While volunteers will not be required to pick up pet waste, a limited number of scoops will be available for those brave participants. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring their own scoop or shovel.

Not only is pet waste gross, it can contaminate stormwater runoff and spread diseases. Residents can help protect the community’s water supply by vowing to clean up after their pets.

Preregister at CRgov.com/SpringUp. However, preregistration is not required. Last-minute volunteers are welcome the day of the event. Teens looking for community service hours should bring a community service waiver already signed by their parents.

Event partners will provide work gloves, trash bags and giveaways. Breakfast burritos, coffee and a free T-shirt will also be available for participants.

Learn more at CRgov.com/SpringUp. In case of bad weather, the event will be held Saturday, May 20.
