Town may destroy illegal signs in rights of way

Those selling homes, holding garage sales and promoting special events and services should be aware of a new rule regarding signs in the Town’s rights of way.

Town Code already prohibits the posting of signs in the rights of way. Still, in recent weeks, Town staff has spent 10 to 12 hours per week (during the course of performing other duties) retrieving such signs.

The Code currently requires the Town to store the confiscated illegal signs for 30 days so the sign owners can reclaim them.

Town Council on Tuesday voted to remove the requirement for the Town to store illegal signs.

That means that starting July 8, illegal signs that Town staff confiscates may be destroyed and disposed of immediately.

The Town’s Sign Ordinance Working Group and the Castle Rock Economic Development Council Policy Committee both recommended the approval of the change.

The new rule will eliminate the costs associated with the inventory, storage and retrieval of confiscated signs. Periodically, signs that have been retrieved by sign owners have been reposted in the right of way.

Anyone with questions regarding the change should contact Zoning Manager Mary Shaw Taylor, 720-733-3557 or mtaylor@CRgov.com.
