Young athletes encouraged to try at annual youth triathlon

The motto is simple – all you have to do is try. Is your child a triathlete in the making? Have them pull on their swimsuits, dust off their bikes and lace up their sneakers. It’s time for the Town’s annual Tri the Rock.

The youth triathlon is Sunday, May 22, at Butterfield Crossing Park and Pool, 3952 W. Butterfield Crossing Drive.

Young athletes ages 5 to 14 are invited to “tri” the course. The race distances are:

• 5 to 6 year olds: 25-meter swim (one pool length), 1-kilometer bike ride (one lap around Butterfield Park) and a 500-meter run
• 7 to 8 and 9 to 10 year olds: 50-meter swim (two pool lengths, down and back), 4-kilometer bike ride and a 1-kilometer run
• 11 to 12 and 13 to 14 year olds: 100-meter swim (four pool lengths, down and back twice), 8-kilometer bike ride and a 2-kilometer run

The race is a benefit for youth health and fitness programs. Registration is $45. Be sure to sign up for the Give Back Program. The program makes sure the participants’ school gets $10 of every entry fee for their physical education programs. Plus, the winning school will get to display the traveling Tri the Rock Trophy for an entire year.

The registration fee includes a T-shirt, goody bag and lunch. Please note the divisions are separated by age. Participants should be registered in the division of the age they will be on race day.

Bike racks open at 6:30 a.m. The race begins at 8 a.m. However, check-in for the 5 to 6 year old age group does not begin until 10:30 a.m., since they are the last group to start the race. There will also be pre-race check-in available from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at the Castle Rock Recreation Center, 2301 Woodlands Blvd.
