New public art one of three pieces expected in Castle Rock this month

A new work of art now graces Downtown’s Festival Park as part of the 2010 Art Encounters rotating art exhibition.

“Dancing Moon IV” – a steel and glass sculpture by Denver artist Reven Swanson – was installed Thursday, adding color and breath of fresh energy to the southern side of the park. It is one of three new pieces of public art expected to be installed in Castle Rock this month.

Though Swanson now lives in Denver, she spent several years of her childhood in Castle Rock. She recalls as a young girl building forts, riding horses and hunting lizards.

She said this piece reflects those and other childhood experiences, running closely with the rhythm of the natural world.

The other two pending pieces are the works of a father and son from the Western Slope.

Manton Botsford of Austin, Colo., created “Midsummer Totem” out of sandstone, steel and brass. The 6-foot-6 sculpture will be installed on the northeast corner of Plum Creek Parkway and Gilbert Street.

Jed Botsford, of Bayfield, Colo., made “Unity Dance” – a 4-foot-wide by 9-inch-high steel piece expected to be installed at the Plum Creek Parkway/Interstate 25 interchange, near the northbound onramp.

Both those pieces also are being brought to Castle Rock through the Art Encounters program, though “Unity Dance” is expected to become a permanent piece in the Town’s public art collection. The other two pieces will be rotated out again next year.

Art Encounters is a yearlong outdoor sculpture exhibit that showcases sculptures in various media and styles throughout Douglas County. The project, which began in 2008, is designed to promote public interest in art; develop community pride; and draw visitors to the retail or civic areas where the works are displayed.

Each artist will be given a $500 stipend for displaying his or her work here. This comes from the Town’s public art budget, which is funded through the Philip S. Miller trust.
